The Orange rolled past New Hampshire on Saturday, but there is something to be mindful of moving forward.
The Syracuse University football team rolled to a convincing 66-3 win over FCS New Hampshire in its opener on Saturday afternoon at the JMA Wireless Dome.
The Orange are now 1-0 and looking to erase the memory of last year's 3-9 campaign. Syracuse won double-digit games in 2024, winning the Holiday Bowl. They have designs of getting back to a bowl game this season.
And while just about everything in the contest was good, there is one thing we're left wondering about as the team moves forward.
Did the wide receiver room prove enough?
It's a question we raised all offseason: In the wake of losing Darrell Gill Jr. to the transfer portal and Calvin Russell III to injury, who was going to step up and make plays in the passing game?
Well, on Saturday, it was Umari Hatcher, who had eight catches for 147 yards and two touchdowns. He had a great connection with quarterback Steve Angeli, making his his first start in nearly a calendar year after a season-ending injury in late September of 2025.
And while Hatcher was great, the rest of the pass catchers left something to be desired. Cole Weaver had three catches, which was the second-most on the roster, and then David Clement, Tyshawn Russell and Daunte Bacheyie each had two.
Perhaps the targets were so spread out because of the score and some different guys being rotated in, but the point remains: Hatcher is the guy, who else follows him? What if a better team takes away Hatcher from the attack, do the Orange have the guys to go out and make them pay for that? Do they have someone else ready to step up?
Syracuse Orange wide receiver Cole Weaver (11) runs with the ball as New Hampshire Wildcats safety Kason Colvin-Powell (35) defends during the second half at the JMA Wireless Dome. Rich Barnes-Imagn ImagesAfter one week, we can't confidently say that they do.
And of course, there's the continuous will-he or won't-he be eligible with regards to fifth-year receiver Justus Ross-Simmons. We still don't have an answer to that question. There's a reason why Syracuse wants him eligible, right? They probably have the same questions we do and see him as an answer to the problem.
Up next
The Orange will be back in action next Saturday afternoon (3:30 p.m. ET) at home against Cal. The Golden Bears are 0-1 after suffering a loss against former PAC-12 rival UCLA on Saturday night.
The early betting line is out, though it's subject to change.
We'll have live coverage from the JMA Wireless Dome for that one, as we will from each SU home game this year.
