Jan. 21: Speaking on Wednesday on 'Cuse Sports Talk, Syracuse football head coach Fran Brown said that Grainger's status on the football team is unclear moving forward. There is a chance that he never suits up for the Orange at all.
Brown said that he was originally going to give Grainger a chance to walk-on and fulfill a dream of his, but with so many new players committed to the Orange, it's uncertain if that's even still an option.
"He's still thinking about it ... I'm not really sure if that will happen because we're getting more and more players on the football team."
Brown also said that he will have to evaluate things moving forward. Reading between the lines it sounds like Grainger may never come to campus, or he may come and try out but not be given a spot on the roster, or he could make the team. There's just too many variables right now to know for sure what's going to happen.
Grainger had posted on social media that he was signing with the Orange back on Dec. 1.
Below is a portion of the post from Dec. 2 from our own Jami Leabow.
Dec. 2 When college football’s early signing day concludes Wednesday, Syracuse won’t have the highest-ranked 2026 class or the most five-star commits. But it certainly won’t lack star power.
Headlining the class will be Syracuse native Nau’Jour Grainger, better known as Billboard Hot 100 recording artist Toosii. The 25-year-old played at Rolesville High School in North Carolina, a wide receiver and kick returner, but he transitioned to music after high school.
In August, he said he was doing the opposite: leaving music behind for now to play football. On Monday, he made it official with a post to Instagram, saying he intended to prove wrong the people who said his time for football had passed.
"Committed," Toosii posted on Instagram. "For every kid who ever had a dream, make it reality. … To be born in Syracuse and move to North Carolina at age 12 and haven't been back since. When Coach Fran called, I knew it was a sign from God. So with that being said, Cuse I'm coming home."
His new teammates probably will be more familiar with him for his songs than his passing routes. His “Favorite Song” single reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2023, three years after the debut of his first album. “Favorite Song” is off his second studio album, called “Naujour,” which hit No. 19 on the Billboard 200.
Grainger is 5-foot-8, 165 pounds and is expected to play at wide receiver for head coach Fran Brown and the Orange. He does not have a 247Sports composite ranking but had an offer from Sacramento State.
Photos on his Instagram account show him on visits to Duke and North Carolina State.
