The Syracuse University men's basketball team is preparing for its opening-round Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Tournament game against SMU on Tuesday (4:30 p.m. ET). After going 15-16 in the regular season and 6-12 inside league play, the Orange earned the No. 14 seed in the tournament. The Mustangs are the No. 11 and on the NCAA Tournament bubble.
Despite defeating the Mustangs earlier this season, Syracuse has just a 32.8 percent chance to win on Tuesday, according to the ESPN matchup predictor. Draft Kings lists the Orange as a 4.5-point underdog.
While the game itself has disappointing odds for the Orange, the tournament odds for SU as a whole are laughable.
Per Fanduel, the odds are as follows:
Duke -330
Virginia +700
Louisville +1300
Miami +1700
UNC +2500
Clemson +3300
NC State +5000
SMU +15000
Florida State +20000
Syracuse +30000
Wake Forest +30000
Virginia Tech +30000
Pitt +30000
California +30000
Stanford +30000
For perspective, a $100 wager placed on Syracuse to win the ACC tournament would net a person $30,000. SU will have to win five games in five days in order to make that a reality.
It's likely that with a healthy Kiyan Anthony and Sadiq White, the Orange's odds of beating SMU (and winning the tournament as a whole) will be adjusted. Both Anthony and White did not play in the Orange's most recent loss against Pittsburgh. The two former top 100 prospects were signed as a part of a nationally-ranked freshman class.
The son of Syracuse legend, and Basketball Hall of Famer Carmelo Anthony, Kiyan has played in 29 games this season. The freshman guard averaged 8.0 points and 1.4 rebounds per game but has seen his playing time and productivity fall off since conference play began. Anthony only has three double-digit scoring games since January.
White averaged 6.1 ppg and 3.3 rebounds while shooting 54 percent from the floor and 36.8 percent from deep in his freshman campaign. The North Carolina native appeared in 30 of 31 games this regular season.
Both players statuses are likely to be decided in the hours before tip-off on Tuesday.
Since joining the ACC in 2014, the Orange have never advanced past the quarterfinals. Syracuse is 6-9 in the tournament, with their most recent win coming last season in the opening round game against Florida State.
For the second consecutive season, the top 15 teams qualify for the ACC tournament. The bottom three teams in the ACC standings will not travel to compete in Charlotte, N.C. For this season's field, the teams that did not qualify include Notre Dame, Boston College and Georgia Tech.
The opening round on Tuesday features teams ranked 10-15. The following round on Wednesday features teams finishing 5-9, along with the winners from the previous round. The quarterfinals on Thursday will include the top four seeds facing off in their respective matchups against winners from the previous round. The ACC finals are scheduled for March 14.
