Congratulations are in order for Syracuse University men's basketball guard Naithan George, who hit a major personal milestone in Saturday's 88-83 loss against Wake Forest.
George, who transferred in from Georgia Tech before the new campaign, scored 13 points to pass the 1,000 point threshold for his career. He was 4-of-8 from the floor and 4-of-4 at the foul line in the effort. Even more impressive than the points, he dished out 10 assists against just two turnovers.
A junior from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, George is averaging 10.3 ppg and 5.4 assists per game. He's shooting 41.6 percent from the floor. He's scored in double-figures 16 times in 29 games, with 22 against Northeastern and Stonehill representing his high marks of the campaign.
Though he's had some turnover issues at times, he's been generally a positive impact on the Orange this season. If he returns for his senior season, he should help solidify the offense even further, but given the uncertainty of the program, his return is no guarantee.
George has been a starter since practically day one of his college career, starting 91 of 92 possible games between Georgia Tech and Syracuse. He averaged 9.8 ppg as a freshman and 12.3 as a sophomore. He led the ACC in assists at 6.5 per game last season.
He scored 285 points as a freshman, 418 as a sophomore and he has an even 300 so far this season.
The Orange have two more regular season games to go: At Louisville on Tuesday and against Pitt on Saturday (March 7) at the JMA Wireless Dome. After that, SU will play at least one ACC Tournament game, provided they make the 15-team field.
After that, the administration will make a decision on the future of head coach Adrian Autry, who is very much on the hot seat.
--The Syracuse women (21-7, 11-6 ACC) will close out the regular season on Sunday afternoon (2 p.m. ET) against last-place Boston College. The Orange enter play in a five-way tie for fifth place in the ACC, so the seeding for the ACC Tournament is very much up for grabs. SU was projected to get a No. 9 seed in the most recent edition of ESPN's bracketology. We took a look at the standings for both the men and the women earlier this week, prior to the Syracuse men losing to Wake Forest.
