The Orange had a list of six names to replace Adrian Autry, who was fired this week. One of those names is already gone.

When Syracuse University fired men's basketball coach Adrian Autry earlier this week, we immediately heard that they were interested in six names for the vacancy.

It doesn't mean that the list can't expand, but the six names given were all seen as strong candidates for various reasons.

However, that initial list is already down to five names. As noted by Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports, St. Louis has given head coach Josh Schertz a long-term contract extension. He will stay at the Atlantic 10 school, where he has the Billikens out to a 27-4 record this season. They will be a popular pick to do damage in the NCAA Tournament when the brackets come out on Sunday.

About Schertz

In his second year at St. Louis, Schertz and the Billikens begin the Atlantic 10 Tournament on Friday against George Washington.

He was a star at the Division II coaching ranks before leading Indiana State to the NCAA Tournament twice in three years and would have been a good fit for Syracuse because of his ability to win in a variety of different situations, but evidently that won't happen now.

Where Syracuse goes from here

Well, the Orange can move through the other five names on the list, including SU alums Mike Hopkins and Gerry McNamara. McNamara, who helped lead the Orange to the NCAA title in 2003, is currently the head coach at Siena University in Albany.

He hasn't explicitly stated that he wants the job, but if he does, he has solid leverage for it.

If SU doesn't want to hire an alum this time around (like Autry), they could zero in on Bryan Hodgson of South Florida. However, it looks like Providence is also targeting him after firing Kim English. That comes from Jeff Goodman of the Field of 68.

About the Orange in 2025-26

Syracuse finished a disappointing 15-17 and 6-12 in the ACC regular season. They were beaten by SMU in the first round of the ACC Tournament on Tuesday, marking the fifth straight year that the program will miss the NCAA Tournament.

Syracuse lost 12 of its final 15 games.

Also on campus

The Syracuse women's basketball team lost in the quarterfinal of the ACC Tournament but is still expected to make the NCAA Tournament. We'll learn for sure on Sunday night when the tournament brackets are revealed. SU won 22 games this season.
