The Syracuse University men's basketball team lost its final Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) game in February on Saturday, falling to Wake Forest 88-83. The Orange now have just two games remaining in the regular season (at Louisville, vs. Pitt). The ACC tournament tips off later this month and multiple seed scenarios are still in play for the Orange.
Here's what you need to know:
For the second consecutive season, the top 15 teams qualify for the ACC tournament. The bottom three teams in the ACC standings will not compete in the postseason tournament in Charlotte, N.C. The opening round on March 10th features teams ranked 10th-15th. The following round on March 11th features teams finishing 5th-9th along with the winners from the previous round. The quarterfinals on Wed., March 12th will include the top four seeds facing off in their respective matchups against winners from the previous round. The ACC conference finals are scheduled for Saturday, March 14th.
Syracuse, currently near the bottom of the conference, could finish as high as ninth, needing the following to happen:
Syracuse defeats both Louisville AND Pittsburgh AND
California, SMU, Syracuse, Wake Forest, Stanford and Virginia Tech end in a six way tie all with a conference record of 8-10. Syracuse would win the tiebreaker based on round-robin record.
If all projected favorites win across the ACC in the conference's final two regular season games, the Orange would qualify as the 13 seed. The Orange are likely the underdog in the Tuesday, March 3rd (9 p.m. ET) matchup on the road against Louisville. Syracuse, in the final home game of the season, is likely to be favored against Pittsburgh. The 13th seed would take on the 12th seed in the ACC Tournament opener. If all favorites do win, the likely opponent would be Virginia Tech. The Orange fell 76-74 to the Hokies this past January at home.
If the Orange lose their remaining two games to finish 6-12, and Pittsburgh and Notre Dame win out, the Orange would potentially be awarded the 15th and final seed. Pittsburgh and Syracuse's seed would be determined by which team defeated the highest ranked ACC finisher in the standings. If it remains tied after that, the 14th and 15th seed would be determined by a coin flip as noted by the ACC.
No. If Syracuse wins one of their last two games they are in. If Notre Dame or Pittsburgh lose one of their last two games, Syracuse is in. If Notre Dame and Pittsburgh win out, and Syracuse loses their remaining two games, Syracuse would own the round robin tiebreaker over Notre Dame (Irish lost to both Pitt and Syracuse during regular season).
