Orange football has had an extremely productive month of June, despite a few disappointments.

Safety Matthew Schlenhardt and wide receiver Josh Barr committed to the Syracuse Class of 2027 on Sunday, capping off a big two weeks on the recruiting trail.

Just who are Schlenhardt and Barr and where will they play on the field?

The Matthew Schlenhardt file

Schlenhardt attends Maine South High School in Park Ridge, Ill., and committed to Syracuse after his official visit this weekend.

Just last week, the 6-foot, 210-pound Schlenhardt attended camp at Syracuse. He announced that he’d received an offer from Syracuse, then arranged a quick turnaround for an official visit.

“Beyond blessed to receive my first division one power 4 offer to the @cusefootball, thankyou coach Fran Brown for the FaceTime!!! Go orange,” he posted to Instagram.

Then, on Sunday, came his announcement of his commitment.

Schlenhardt does not carry a ranking from the 247Sports composite or from Rivals, but he got a good look from coaches at the Orange’s Franchise Camp and impressed.

In his junior season in 2025, Schlenhardt was named to Illinois’ 90th All-State Football Team, and the Chicago-Sun Times named him to its All-Area team. Per the newspaper, he led Maine South with 54 tackles, 22 of them for loss. He had eight sacks, six passes defensed and four forced fumbles. He has 15 sacks over two seasons.

The Josh Barr file

The 6-foot-3, 195-pound Barr is listed officially as an athlete, but he likely will line up at wide receiver for the Orange.

He isn’t venturing too far from home; he plays at Irondequoit High School in Rochester. He was limited to four games in 2025 because of injury, but he made the most of them: 30 receptions for 352 yards and five touchdowns.

Barr announced his commitment just before midnight on Sunday. He chose Syracuse over Arkansas, Rhode Island and Buffalo.

He also does not carry a 247Sports ranking.

June haul

The additions of Schlenhardt and Barr continue a strong June on the recruiting trail. The Orange also have received commitments from the following players this month – and the month is only half over:

Botond Varga, OT, Tabor Academy (Marion, Mass.) Chanin Harris, WR, Byrnes H.S. (Duncan, S.C.) Braylon Otis, Edge, Jones H.S. (Orlando, Fla.) Nico Ramos, IOL, American Heritage H.S. (Plantation, Fla.) Tank White, Athlete, Melbourne Central Catholic H.S. (Melbourne, Fla.) Jamel Griffin, CB, Opelika H.S. (Opelika, Ala.) Edan Richardson, DL, Archbishop McCarthy (Fort Lauderdale, FL)

With the new commitments, Syracuse’s Class of 2027 rose to No. 43 overall, according to the 247Sports composite. The class, with 18 commitments so far, is ranked No. 11 out of the 17 teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Yes, Syracuse has had some recruiting disappointments this month, but overall, Brown and the Orange are building a solid class.

And plenty of time remains for Brown, who is known in part for his excellence in recruiting, to add to that class. Syracuse, in fact, could be on its way to its top recruiting class ever in 2027.
