Matthew Bergeron is currently a big part of why the Atlanta Falcons are 2-2.

The Syracuse Orange football program has failed to produce an NFL first-round draft pick for 13 consecutive years. The Orange are hoping that streak may end soon, as it is possible that current defensive back Chris Peal could earn that distinction in 2027.

And while unlikely at this time, there's always a chance that another Orange player could find himself in the mix.

Atlanta Falcons offensive lineman Matthew Bergeron nearly broke that streak in 2023 when he was selected in the second round. And in the four years since he was drafted, Bergeron has quickly become one of the better offensive linemen in the leagues - and he's receiving plenty of praise.

The Matthew Bergeron File

Bergeron's journey to the NFL is one of the more unique paths in recent history.

Born in Canada, Bergeron played gridiron football (similar to rugby) and not American football. However, as reporter Mike McAllister noted, Bergeron came to a Syracuse football camp as part of a group of Canadian prospects.

He was unknown to the coaching staff when he arrived. After a few reps, the coaching staff offered him a scholarship and he committed shortly thereafter. At 6-foot-5 and 315 pounds, Bergeron became a top player for the Orange. In four seasons, Bergeron played in 46 games and became a two-time All-ACC selection. In 2023, the Falcons selected him and in August, Bergeron signed a four year, $96 million dollar extension with the team.

How about the praise he's getting?

After the Falcons 45-24 victory over the New Orléans Saints, on Monday night, NFL Insider Brian Baldinger took to social media and offered high praise for the performance for the former Orange lineman.

"Bergeron that's about as good as you can get in the league (NFL)"

A former offensive lineman, Baldinger spent over 10 seasons in the NFL as a player. Following his playing career, Baldinger began his broadcasting career. His resume has included jobs on the national level with the NFL Network and Fox Sports.

His "Baldy Breakdowns," which include social media clips of watching NFL games on tape has become a popular feature for fans.

What's up next for Bergeron?

If Bergeron continues play at this level, it is very possible he may be named an All-Pro for the first time in his career. Bergeron will get a chance to showcase his production in front on a national audience Sunday night when the Falcons host the Baltimore Ravens in NBC's primetime game. Kickoff between the Falcons and Ravens is set for 8:20 p.m. ET.

What's next for the Current Orange?

Syracuse will travel to Charlottesville, Va. to take on the Virginia Cavaliers on Saturday. The Orange are listed as a 9 1/2 point underdog by Draftkings. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET.

The Orange are 2-2 after beating the UConn Huskies 42-41 on Saturday.
