Syracuse Football: Could Orange Bring Back Popular Throwback Uniform?
Oct 28, 2026 12:46 PM

Athletics Director Bryan Blair hinted at the return on social media.

Over the last several years, Syracuse University athletics has leaned into nostalgia for many of its sports programs. Whether it be the hiring of former standout athletes to lead programs (Adrian Autry, Gerry McNamara, Gary Gait, Felisha Legette-Jack), the return of former athletes being honored before games (Hakim Warrick), or the use of popular numbers (Joey Spallina wearing No. 22 in men's lacrosse), Syracuse has found ways to both honor the past and strive for future success.

And now, could another piece of past Syracuse athletics be returning soon?

Setting things up...

Before we get fully into that, understand this. Earlier this week, the Orange revealed that they are going to wear a special "Otto the Orange" helmet for Saturday's football game against SMU. It will be the first time the program has worn this helmet.

A new uniform, and a throwback?

Well, with uniform talk about on social media, one user asked if the Orange were going to bring back their throwback uniforms from the Marvin Harrison-Donovan McNabb era.

Athletics Director Bryan Blair saw the question and replied:"Patience grasshopper"

Syracuse football's uniform from 1990-04 looked very similar. While some years featured small adjustments (background color on numbers, thickness of actual jersey) the blue and orange pattern stayed relatively the same.

Why this uniform combination is still so popular with Syracuse fans?

Fans of the Orange love this uniform combination because that uniform was the one worn during Syracuse's best run in program history. From 1990-04, Syracuse football posted a 114-63-3 record. That also included seven Top-25 finishes, six bowl wins in nine appearances and four BIG East Conference titles.

That 14-year period also included the careers of some of the most popular players, including McNabb, Harrison, Rob Konrad, Kevin Johnson, and Hall of Famer Dwight Freeney.

A potential revival of the uniform may bring some both fond memories and hopeful success again to a program who has yet to match that 14 year stretch in the years since.

What does the rest of the Syracuse Orange football schedule look like?

This Saturday: noon ET vs. SMU

Nov. 7 vs Clemson 12:00 p.m. ET

Nov. 14  @ NC State, TBD

Nov. 21 @ Boston College, TBD

Nov. 28 vs Notre Dame, TBD

The Orange (3-4) will need to win three of their last five games to qualify for a bowl game. If the Orange are able to win six games in total, the bowl invitation would be extended following the regular season. The decision on what bowl game they may play in along with the details and other information would arrive on Dec. 6.
