The Orange were blasted by Notre Dame on Saturday and the numbers that keep coming out of the contest just make it look worse and worse.

The history just keeps getting worse for the Syracuse University football team with regards to the program's 70-7 loss against Notre Dame on Saturday afternoon.

Per Notre Dame PR on social media:

Historical comparisons of FBS teams is limited by databases and access, much of it ends going back to 1996.

Since 1996 @NDFootball is the only FBS team to rush for over 300 yards in a game on less than 25 carries.

The Irish ran for 329 yards on 24 carries against Syracuse.

And as bad as that is, there are two notes that make it even worse for the Orange.

The ways in which Notre Dame scored

The Irish were up 21-0 in the first quarter without even taking an offensive snap. There were two interception returns for touchdowns in the first three Syracuse possessions, and a blocked punt return for a touchdown, all before the Irish touched the ball.

So, they put up these historic rushing totals without even having the ball for much of the first quarter. Notre Dame only had the ball for 18+ minutes the entire game, and they still won the contest by 63 points.

The Orange knew it was coming

The Irish were up 35-0 at the end of the first quarter and 49-0 at halftime. It was evident that much of the game would be spent on the ground in order to churn clock, and Syracuse still couldn't stop it. In fact, Notre Dame threw for only 67 yards as an offense, but it didn't matter at all.

Jeremiyah Love, a Heisman Trophy candidate, had just eight carries, but he still amassed 171 yards and three touchdowns. He averaged 21.4 yards per carry.

    What's next

The Orange will finish out the regular season on Saturday afternoon (3:00 p.m. ET) at home against Boston College. Both programs have seen better days, with Syracuse sitting at 3-8 and BC at 1-10. The Eagles have lost 10 consecutive contests and haven't won since beating Fordham on Aug. 30.

For comparison's sake, they "only" lost to Notre Dame 25-10 on Nov. 1 and they had a late lead against nationally-ranked Georgia Tech before losing 36-34 on Nov. 15.

They are coming off a bye before this matchup with Syracuse.

Once the game is over, it's onto an important offseason for head coach Fran Brown, who will do his best to remake the program into an ACC contender next year.
