The Orange addressed concerns about quarterback and special teams at his weekly media session. The Orange are now 2-3.
The Syracuse Orange football team was not able to finish off a late comeback attempt in losing to the Virginia Cavaliers 28-25 on Saturday night in Charlottesville, Va. The Orange (2-3) are still searching for their first ACC win in the 2026 season - their first conference win since September of 2025. The Orange, for nearly a month, have continued to struggle at the quarterback position and on special teams.
It's fair to note that the Orange have also dealt with injury issues at the QB position.
Head coach Fran Brown addressed the team's biggest issues on Monday during his weekly media session.
Injury updates on three quarterbacks
Fourth-string quarterback Danny Lauter, a transfer from Georgetown, saw action in Saturday's game against Virginia. He went 1-for-4 for 46 yards and a touchdown. The three quarterbacks ahead of him on the depth chart have all dealt with injuries.
On Steve Angeli- Cleared to practice Tuesday or Wednesday. It is possible he could play on Saturday against Louisville. He had a recent PRP injection in his Achilles tendon, which he tore last September. He has four touchdowns and five interceptions this season.
On Malachi Nelson- The starter from the Virginia game suffered an apparent collarbone issue in the fourth quarter. He hopes to practice this week, but there was no firm update on if he would.
On Amari Odom- Brown offered no indication that the shoulder injury that kept him from starting on Saturday needed surgery. Odom will continue to practice with the team this week. After Saturday's loss, Brown had said something in his throwing shoulder might be torn.
Brown on potential special teams changes
The Orange have gone through two different kickers, two different holders, along with some questionable snaps from long snapper Fran Brown Jr., this season. Syracuse has missed seven field goals and four extra-points.
Kicking woes directly contributed to losses against Cal (21-18) and Virginia.
Brown on if any other changes could be coming:
"We will just figure that out as we practice. We will always just try to put the best players out there.
What's up next for Syracuse football?
The Orange will return to Central New York and play the team's first home game in over a month. Syracuse hosts Louisville inside the JMA Wireless Dome. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET. SyracuseRoundtable will have coverage on site and following the Saturday evening contest.
Louisville is coming off a win against Florida State.
