After a handful of successes over the weekend, the Orange hit on another defensive back on Monday.

After landing a pair of prospects over the weekend, the Syracuse University football team landed another recruit from the Class of 2027 on Monday.

As noted by Mike McAllister of 247 Sports, the Orange have signed three-star defensive back Jamel Griffin.

The cornerback from Alabama chose Syracuse over Kentucky, South Florida, Tulane, Troy and others. As noted by McAllister, Griffin's calling card is his speed, something he also utilizes in high school track & field.

He was the Alabama 7A 100m silver medalist as a junior. He ran several blazing fast 100m times, including a personal best of 10.57. During his junior year on the gridiron, he record(ed) 83 tackles, four tackles for loss and one fumble recovery while helping Opelika to a runner-up finish in Alabama 7A.

He'll have one more season of high school football before joining Syracuse for the 2027 campaign.

Is this a done deal for sure?

Not necessarily. Having just finished his junior year, Griffin won't have to sign anything today. The early signing period is set for December of this year, while the official signing day isn't until February of 2027.

Those are the next dates on the calendar for fans to watch, as players can still back out of verbal commitments up until those dates.

About the Orange this season

Before Griffin can get to campus, the Orange have to play the 2026 campaign, and it's one that features a good amount of optimism in Central New York.

Even despite a 3-9 record last year, Syracuse should be much better given the return of quarterback Steve Angeli from a torn Achilles. Beyond him, the Orange have strengthened the quarterback room as a whole through the transfer portal. Should Angeli go down again, SU has experienced options to go to, including former No. 1 overall recruit Malachi Nelson, who previously played at USC, Boise State and UTEP.

Syracuse will begin the season on Sept. 5 at home against the University of New Hampshire.

Also on campus

We already knew that former Syracuse men's basketball sharpshooter Buddy Boeheim was going to suit up for the SU alumni "Boeheim's Army" team at this year's version of the "TBT."

Now, we know another member of the Orange squad that will try to take home the $2 million prize: Elijah Hughes, who was announced as playing on Monday.

Hughes spent three years playing in college from 2016-2020, suiting up for both East Carolina and Syracuse. In two years in Central New York, he started all 66 games he played in, averaging 16.3 ppg total. He had 19 ppg in his final season while also shooting 34.2 percent from three-point range. He was an All-ACC selection in 2019-20.

The first "Boeheim's Army" game is set for July 21.
