Rickie Collins started five games for the Orange this season.

The Syracuse University football team is set to lose another quarterback off its roster when the transfer portal opens on Friday morning.

According to a report from Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports, Rickie Collins will exit the program. He'll join Luke Carney as SU quarterbacks to depart the roster.

Per Zenitz:

Syracuse quarterback Rickie Collins is expected to enter the transfer portal, sources tell me, @McAllisterMike1 and @chris_hummer.

Collins, who is repped by @AiC_Athletes, made five starts for Syracuse this season. Former four-star recruit who began his career at LSU.

About Collins's season

Collins, who has that four-star pedigree, really struggled in his action for the Orange. He was just 97-of-181 passing (54 percent) with six touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Syracuse lost each game he started as the Orange went 0-8 after the injury to starting quarterback Steve Angeli, who was lost for the season in the fourth game of the year.

They finished 3-9 overall.

Why would Collins want to leave?

In today's era of college football, players will leave for any number of reasons: NIL opportunities, NFL opportunities, playing time, location, conference prestige, you name it. We can't be certain exactly why Collins is departing, but it's evident that he won't be the starter in 2026 with Angeli returning from injury. That has to factor in.

About SU and the portal

With Jhontay Cook and Collins both entering the portal, Syracuse is now set to lose 27 players off its roster. Of course, they'll backfill some of those spots with their own portal additions and recruits, but the constant roster turnover has to be draining for Fran Brown and his staff.

Elsewhere on campus

--The Syracuse University men's basketball team dropped a 64-61 contest against Clemson on Wednesday afternoon, falling to 9-5 overall. Donnie Freeman led the way with 18 points but Syracuse is now 0-1 inside Atlantic Coast Conference play.

They'll be back in action on Jan. 6 against Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Georgia. Tip-off is 7 p.m. ET.

--The SU women avenged a tough loss against Duke on Sunday by beating Florida State on Thursday night. They are now 12-2 overall and 2-1 inside league play.
