Johntay Cook is 26th member of the Orange to enter the transfer portal.

Johntay Cook is the latest member of the Orange to hit the transfer portal.

The college football transfer portal opens up on Friday morning and the Syracuse University football team is set to be hit hard once again.

As noted by On3, starting wide receiver Johntay Cook is entering the portal, and this comes just days after fellow starting wideout Darrell Gill Jr. announced he was entering.

From On3's Hayes Fawcett:

BREAKING: Syracuse WR Johntay Cook plans to enter the @TransferPortal, source tells @On3Sports This season he totaled 45 receptions for 549 yards and 2 TDs The former 5-Star recruit started his career at Texas

As always, it's worth noting that just because a player enters the portal, it doesn't mean they are leaving officially. However, once a player commits to seeing what else is out there, it's generally a sign they are going to leave.

About Cook

A perfect representation of the modern college football era, Cook will be looking for his third program in four years. He's played 32 career games, registering 61 catches and 822 yards. He has four total touchdowns. He is a Texas native.

Why would he want to transfer?

In today's game, there's any number of reasons that a player could want to transfer. NIL opportunities could be better somewhere else, as could the opportunity to win at a higher level. It was certainly a frustrating season for Syracuse, who went 3-9 and ended the year with eight straight losses in the wake of Steve Angeli's season-ending injury.

Angeli will be returning at quarterback next season, but evidently that wasn't enough to keep Cook from looking elsewhere.

Where the Orange stand now

According to Brent Axe of Syracuse.com, Cook is the 26th player to enter his name in the portal for the Orange. But, just like other schools across the country, they will get their fair share of players coming in as well.

Also on campus

--The Syracuse women's basketball team will play another ACC contest on Thursday night (6 p.m. ET) when they host Florida State at the JMA Wireless Dome. The SU women are 11-2 overall, but are coming off a 20-point loss against Duke on Sunday. The Orange are 1-1 inside league play, having also beaten SMU earlier in the campaign.

--The SU men will be back in action on Jan. 6 on the road at Georgia Tech. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. ET and that will be a big game for Naithan George and Ibrahim Souare, who played previously for the Yellow Jackets.
