It's been a tough week for Syracuse football with regards to quarterbacks, as freshmen Jakhari Williams and Luke Carney both announced they were entering the transfer portal.
However, Fran Brown's program is looking to make the week a whole lot better, as they just offered top quarterback Elijah Haven a scholarship. Haven, who just finished his junior year in Louisiana, is the top-ranked player in the incoming Class of 2027, according to 24/7 Sports.
Haven posted about getting the offer on social media.
The following comes from an April 2025 24/7 Sports evaluation:
Supersized quarterback with first-round pick potential if he can put it all together. Possesses an excellent combination of strength and athleticism to go along with impressive competitive drive and football character. Earned MaxPreps National Sophomore Player of the Year honors after a 10th-grade campaign in which he posted a 14-1 record and accounted for 56 total touchdowns
He was just named the Gatorade Player of the Year in Louisiana.
Current quarterback Steve Angeli has two years left of eligibility. It's unclear if he'll use them both but if he does, he could be the quarterback for both 2026 and 2027.
If Haven were to come to Syracuse, he'd be a freshman in that 2027 season, learning behind Angeli.
What does this mean for Haven? Potentially two things. We've talked a lot about how difficult is to develop backup quarterbacks in the transfer portal era because players often leave rather than waiting for their turn.
If Syracuse can find a quarterback in the next few years to stay, they may be more prepared to take over for Angeli when he leaves, leaving Haven behind the eight-ball. But if quarterbacks keep transferring out, perhaps Haven will be the last man standing and ready to take the job over.
