Just days after losing quarterback Jakhari Williams to the transfer portal, the Syracuse University football program is set to lose another quarterback.
Brent Axe of Syracuse.com reports that freshman Luke Carney is also set to hit the portal.
A Texas native, Carney appeared in four games for the Orange, going just 5-of-7 for 22 yards. He also ran 10 times for 28 yards and he picked up a rushing touchdown. He played against Notre Dame in a 70-7 loss, and he saw action against North Carolina.
He'll have three years of eligibility remaining.
His absence speaks to a problem we have written about multiple times here at Syracuse Roundtable.
The Orange have a starting quarterback, right now it's Steve Angeli, and he has two years left of eligibility. With Williams and Carney gone, the Orange need to bring in multiple new quarterbacks in recruiting. If Angeli stays healthy and plays well, and these new quarterbacks never see the field, what are the odds they transfer to a place where they will play? Fairly high in today's climate.
If Angeli gets hurt again next season, then Syracuse is left with a woefully unprepared backup room again. It seems as if the ability to truly develop and hang onto backup quarterbacks is gone, because everybody wants to find a place where they can play - and play instantly.
Basically, Fran Brown has to hope that he has a good starter, and that that starter has to stay healthy. It's a vicious cycle.
The Orange went 3-9 in 2025, losing their final eight games in the wake of Angeli's injury.

--The 6-4 Syracuse men's basketball team is back in action on Wednesday night at the JMA Wireless Dome against Mercyhurst. The Orange are coming off a 70-69 loss against Hofstra on Saturday afternoon. It was the first time Syracuse had ever lost to its in-state foe.
Sophomore Donnie Freeman, who leads the Orange with nearly 18 ppg, will not play. He will warm-up though as he continues to battle a right foot injury.
Our own Tom Goslowski will be covering the game in person. You can follow him on social media @TomGozz. We will have postgame reaction live from the Dome as well.
