The Orange lost to Virginia 28-25 on Saturday night, falling to 2-3 on the year.
The Syracuse Orange football team fell to 2-3 on Saturday night, dropping a 28-25 contest against the Virginia Cavaliers in Charlottesville, Va. With the loss, the Orange are now 0-3 inside the league.
Syracuse led 17-7 at halftime, but wasn't able to hold the lead.
Orange head coach Fran Brown's record is now 5-12 over program's last 17 games dating back to last year. One win came against an FCS team (New Hampshire), two came in overtime (UConn) and 10 of the last 12 losses have come against ACC teams.
Here are some of the most important quotes from Brown following the team's loss on Saturday night.
Injury update on Amari Odom
On Thursday, the quarterback appeared on the team's injury report for the first time. By Friday, reports speculated that Odom would not start and instead Malachi Nelson would be leading the offense. That proved to be true despite Odom warming up with the team during pregame activities. Brown offered an update on Odom's injury status:
"I'm not sure the exact things. He got an MRI the other day. He could practice all week but could never lift it up completely. He was out there today (in warm ups) throwing the ball a bit, something might be torn in his shoulder or something of that nature so we will see where that's all at."
If Odom's shoulder is indeed torn, that's likely the end of season for him. Odom had just one start, but he put together a six-touchdown performance and a victory for the Orange. Brown will likely address Odom's status again on Monday during his weekly media session.
The quarterback room is in disarray, with Nelson and Steve Angeli also dealing with injuries.
On continued special teams woes
The Orange again missed two field goals. They have now missed seven field goals and four extra-points this season.
"It's tough man. It's just really tough. Two tough field goals missed again. Similar to what went down in the first game. But they are young kids. I feel for them."
Brown did not indicate if any changes will be made in the future. Kicker Tripp Woody suffered a hamstring injury and did not play. Shay Barker handled the kicking duties this week.
On the second half comeback by Virginia
What sparked the comeback by the Cavaliers?
"Just the run. They do a good job of establishing that run game."
The Orange allowed 21 points in the second half compared to just seven in the first half. Virginia finished with 169 yards on the ground.
While Virginia led the game in rushing, Syracuse outgained the Cavaliers through the air and in total yardage and, the Orange also led in total of time of possession.
What's next for Syracuse football?
Syracuse will travel back to Central New York and begin preparations' for the team's first home game in over a month. The Orange will host the Louisville Cardinals in an ACC matchup. The Cardinals won on Friday night against the Florida State Seminoles 44-20. Kickoff on Saturday is set for 7:30 p.m. ET.
