What type of impact could this hire bring to the program? We'll have to see, but it's another important step for Gerry McNamara's staff.

According to a recent report from Mike Waters of Syracuse.com, Syracuse men's basketball will hire Greg Fahey as the team's new general manager. Fahey will join the program after spending the past season as a part of the Hampton basketball coaching staff.

Remember, Syracuse gutted its entire coaching staff in mid-March as it fired previous head coach Adrian Autry. The Orange hired Gerry McNamara at the end of March as his replacement.

Here's what you need to know.

Who is Greg Fahey?

Fahey has spent multiple seasons with different programs across the college basketball world. Before his time at Hampton, Fahey spent one season as a special assistant to the head coach at Georgetown. Some Upstate New York basketball fans may be familiar with Fahey's work as he spent four seasons at Siena. Fahey did not work under McNamara when he was at Siena

During his four seasons at Siena under Coach Carmen Maciariello, Fahey served as a director of basketball operations for two seasons, followed by assistant coach for two seasons.

What's the role of the general manager in college basketball?

In the evolving world that is college athletics, a general manger's duties seem to shift year after year and school by school. Fahey is scheduled to replace Alex Kline, who served as team's general manager from July 2024-March 2026. Kline's role as a general manager was described as this on the team's official website:

"A new position, the general manager supports Coach (Adrian) Autry in managing various aspects of the men’s basketball program at Syracuse. The primary responsibilities include scouting and recruiting, former student-athlete engagement, Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities, transfer portal management, and institutional fundraising in collaboration with University Advancement."

It's likely that later this month we will find out how much Fahey's role under McNamara will resemble Kline's duties from the past two seasons.

What's the rest of the roster look like for the Orange?

Syracuse currently has 11 players committed to the 2026-27 roster after the recent signing of Luke Wilson this week.

Those 11 players include:

Guards: Kiyan Anthony, Noah Lobdell, Gavin Doty, Aiden Tobiason*,  Garwey Dual*,  Ryan Moesch

Forwards: Sadiq White Jr., Tasman Goodrick*, Mark Morano Mahmutovič*

Center: Abdramane Siby*, Luke Wilson*

Some believe the number is at 12 because of Calvin Russell III.

Russell said he has spoken to McNamara about next season. Russell suffered an injury earlier this spring that will likely keep him out for a majority of the football season. There is still no time table on his return. He played in one game this past season.

It's likely the team could redshirt Russell or move on from him at least for this season to open another roster spot for a heathy player.

It is also possible that the team now shifts it's focus to finding recruits for the 2027-28 team with Fahey likely to begin his role soon.
