Lawrence Moten passed away before the start of the 2025-26 season.

Coming off four consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference losses, the Syracuse University men's basketball team returns home on Saturday night to host Notre Dame at the JMA Wireless Dome. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. ET and we've already identified the contest as a must-win game for the reeling Orange.

Notre Dame is 11-10 overall and 2-6 within league play. After this? Syracuse takes on ranked opponents in North Carolina and Virginia - both on the road.

However, as important as the game is on the floor, it's also important in terms of what happens before tip-off. The Orange will honor the life of Lawrence Moten, who passed away before the start of this season.

About Moten's 'Cuse career

Just after superstar Derrick Coleman and about a decade before Carmelo Anthony, Moten was a dominant force for the Orange in the 1990s (1991-95). Before the 'one-and-done' rule and the transfer portal, Moten spent four years in Central New York, averaging 19.3 points per game for his career.

He made an instant impact, scoring 18.2 ppg as a freshman, 17.9 as a sophomore, then 21.5 as a junior and 19.6 as a senior. His 2,334 career points are the most in SU history.

He also averaged 4.9 rebounds per game and 2.5 assists.

Syracuse won 20 games or more in each of his four seasons, advancing to the NCAA Tournament in his freshman, junior and senior years. The Orange got to the Sweet 16 when he was a junior, falling to No. 1 Missouri.

SU has been wearing a commemorative patch on its uniforms all season.

About Moten's NBA career

A three-year veteran of the Vancouver Grizzlies and Washington Wizards, Moten averaged 6.3 ppg for his career. He was the No. 36 pick in the 1995 Draft by the Grizzlies.

This was the first season of Grizzlies basketball and the team went 15-67. Bryant Reeves was the No. 6 pick in that NBA Draft and the first pick in team history, while Byron Scott and Greg Anthony also were on the roster.
