After defeating previously No. 1 - ranked Maryland on Friday night at the JMA Wireless Dome, the Syracuse University men's lacrosse team is now No. 1 itself. After advancing to the Final Four in 2025, the Orange appear to be a national title contender again this season. They are 3-0 heading into Saturday's tilt with Harvard.
It's the first of six consecutive road games for the Orange, something they haven't done since 1972.
While the ultimate storyline of the season will be Gary Gait's teams quest for a championship, it's also worth noting that incredible history is on the line for one member of the group.
Syracuse superstar Joey Spallina, who was just named to the Tewaaraton Watch List, enters Saturday's game just 43 points away from tying the all-time program record (307) held by Mike Powell.
Spallina is averaging six points per game so far, meaning he'd need to keep up that average for eight more games to pass Powell's record. The Orange have 12 additional regular season games, plus the ACC Tournament and any subsequent NCAA tournament games for him to do it. Barring injury, it seems certain that Powell's record will fall.
Harvard is ranked No. 13/14 in the nation, another tough test.
--The Syracuse men's basketball team, just beaten by 37 points by Duke on Monday, is back in action on Saturday afternoon (1 p.m. ET) against the University of North Carolina. The Tar Heels, who already beat SU this season, were just throttled 82-58 by North Carolina State. UNC is dealing with a rash of injuries, including to superstar Caleb Wilson.
Our own Tom Goslowski will have live coverage from the JMA Wireless Dome from that game.
--Sticking with men's basketball, should Hall of Famer Carmelo Anthony have a say in the direction of the program? At least one former teammate thinks so.
--The SU women's basketball team, picked 13th in the ACC preseason poll, has defied all expectations this season. They are 21-5 and currently sit in third place in the conference, but they have a big matchup on Sunday with NC State.
--And SU football fans can breathe a sigh of relief as top recruit Calvin Russell, who is also on the basketball team, is not hurt. He missed Monday's game against Duke because of illness, not injury. The SU football spring game is set for April 11.
