The shooter has joined the Orange after a stint at Temple.
Earlier this offseason, the Syracuse University men's basketball team landed Aiden Tobiason from Temple in the transfer portal.
He was another solid add for new head coach Gerry McNamara, especially when you consider that the Orange need to replace all five starters from a season ago, as well as one of their top bench options in Tyler Betsey.
The only question was whether or not Tobiason would actually suit up for the Orange at all. He entered the NBA Draft and also took part in the G-League Combine, which continued to give him an opportunity to get professional looks.
On Tuesday, we got the answer as Tobiason withdrew from the NBA Draft. He will now play for the Orange in 2026-27.
About Tobiason
A Delaware native, Tobiason just finished his second season at Temple. He started 32 games for the Owls, who now compete in the American Conference, scoring 15.3 ppg on 48.0 percent shooting. He pulled down 3.7 rebounds and dished out two assists per game.
He was a member of the All-Freshman team in the AAC in 2024-25.
What to like about this move
1) Tobiason is clearly a scorer, and Syracuse needs scoring. With Donnie Freeman, Nate Kingz and Naithan Geoerge all leaving for the portal, and JJ Starling and William Kyle III leaving for graduation, the Orange are having to replace all five starters, plus Betsey.
2) Listed at 6'5, Tobiason is long and athletic, which will allow McNamara to utilize his body-type defensively. Offensively, he can play in either the guard or the forward role, and Mike McAllister of 247 Sports notes that he also backed up at point guard for Temple.
What's the worry?
1) Well, Tobiason shot just 33.8 percent from three-point range last season, and while that's not awful, it's not a great percentage for someone who attempted more than four 3-pointers a game. Syracuse was very poor from beyond-the-arc in 2025-26, and bringing in knockdown shooters would go a long way toward diversifying the offense.
2) Also, given that Tobiason is 6'5, he's the same height as new transfer Gavin Doty, and both players are just two inches shorter than Kiyan Anthony (6'7). Is there enough room on the floor for all these combo guard and wing players? How does all the playing time shake out?
All three players have at least two years of eligibility remaining, with Anthony having three.
