Shavane Anderson, who we weren't sure was even going to have a role this season, was a huge part of the opener.
The Syracuse football team moved out to 1-0 on Saturday afternoon with a resounding 66-3 win over New Hampshire at the JMA Wireless Dome.
The margin of victory was a historic one for Fran Brown's team, which is seeking to erase the stench of a 3-9 campaign in 2025.
However, the final score wasn't the only thing that was historic for SU, as the play of running back Shavane Anderson Jr. was as well.
The true freshman carried the ball 10 times for 102 yards, also registering three touchdowns.
His 10 yards per carry led a Syracuse rushing attack that gained 238 yards in total. As noted by ESPN Insights, Anderson is the first true freshman in at least the last 20 seasons of Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) history with 100+ yards and three rushing touchdowns in their collegiate debut.
A York, Penn. native, Anderson was a three-star recruit coming out of high school. He was a First-Team All-State selection in Pennsylvania.
It will be interesting to see how Brown handles things moving forward, given that Tylik Hill (15 carries for 90 yards) was the starter on Saturday and Matthew Outten (10 carries, 44 yards) also played a prominent role. This doesn't even account for transfers Ahmad Miller (Jackson State) and Ju'juan Johnson (LSU), both of who we thought could play solid roles as well. Neither of them played in this game.
The Orange are back in action on Saturday afternoon at home against Cal to open up ACC play. The Golden Bears lost their opener against UCLA 45-24.
Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET and we'll have live coverage from the JMA Wireless Dome.

It's a question we raised all offseason: In the wake of losing Darrell Gill Jr. to the transfer portal and Calvin Russell III to injury, who was going to step up and make plays in the passing game for the Orange offfense?
Well, on Saturday, it was Umari Hatcher, who had eight catches for 147 yards and two touchdowns. He had a great connection with quarterback Steve Angeli, making his his first start in nearly a calendar year after a season-ending injury in late September of 2025.
And while Hatcher was great, the rest of the pass catchers left something to be desired. Cole Weaver had three catches, which was the second-most on the roster, and then David Clement, Tyshawn Russell and Daunte Bacheyie each had two.
Do the Orange have enough playmakers in the room to help alleviate the stress on Hatcher? It will remain to be seen. We've been talking about the receiver depth for months.
