The Syracuse University women's basketball team is forcing people to pay attention.
The group earned a signature win over Stanford on Sunday afternoon, beating the Cardinal 69-58 at the JMA Wireless Dome. Grad student Dominique Darius led the way with a career-high 26 points.
The Orange are now 16-3 and 6-2 inside Atlantic Coast Conference play. After missing the NCAA Tournament and going 12-18 last season, they are building a strong resume for this year's event. Stanford is 15-5 and one of the most historic programs in the women's game, having been to 37 NCAA Tournaments and 15 Final Fours. The Cardinal won the national title in 2021.
If you're just starting to catch SU women's hoops fever, here's what you should know:
--Four players score in double-figures for this group: Laila Phelia (14.2 ppg), Uche Izoje (13.8), Darius (12.7) and Sophie Burrows (10.4)
--Izoje, from Nigeria, is one of the most impactful first-year players in the country and could win 'Freshman of the Year' at the end of the season.
--Darius is actually in her fifth collegiate season. She played three years for UCLA and one for USC, but is making her biggest impact in Central New York. She's the daughter of former Jacksonville Jaguars safety Donovin Darius, who also played at Syracuse.
--SU is coached by Felisha Legette-Jack, who is in her fourth season with the Orange. She also played at Syracuse, graduating in 1989. She went 20-13 in her first season, 24-8 in her second, 12-18 in her third and is now 16-3. The Orange have been to the NCAA Tournament just once in her previous three full seasons.
--The Orange shoot 42.8 percent from the floor, 30.6 percent from three-point range and 69.3 percent at the foul line.
The Orange will be tested by another blue blood program on Sunday, Jan. 25 when they take on North Carolina at 2 p.m. ET. The Tar Heels are 15-5 and 4-3 in the league. That game will be played in Chapel Hill, N.C.
--The SU men's basketball team is back in action on Wednesday night at 9 p.m. ET when they take on Virginia Tech at the JMA Wireless Dome. The Orange are coming off a disappointing overtime loss against Boston College, who was 0-4 in the ACC at the time. Despite the loss, Nate Kingz turned in a career-best performance with 27 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Our own Tom Goslowski will be at Wednesday's game, so follow him on social media @TomGozz.
--The Syracuse football team got a resolution to a messy situation involving transfer tight end Michael Smith over the weekend. He will not be playing for the Orange.
