Takeaways From Syracuse's Disappointing Road Loss at Boston College cover image

The Orange saw their NCAA Tournament hopes take a hit on Saturday afternoon.

The Syracuse University men's basketball team suffered a disappointing 81-73 overtime loss on the road at Boston College on Saturday afternoon. The Orange are now 12-6 overall and 3-2 inside Atlantic Coast Conference play, while the previously winless-in-the-league Eagles are now 1-4 inside the ACC. Boston College had losses to the likes of Maine and and Central Connecticut State, making this a particularly hurtful loss for the Orange in their quest to get to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2020-21.

Let's get to the takeaways:

1) Nate Kingz plays best game in an Orange Uniform

The senior was dynamic in multiple ways for the Orange on Saturday, scoring a game-high 27 points. He was 8-of-12 from the floor and 5-of-6 from three-point range. He shot well from deep and got to the basket well, finishing around the rim. He also went 6-of-6 at the free-throw line and pulled down six rebounds.

The Orange need a partner for Donnie Freeman in the scoring column, and Kingz has the ability, but this was his most impactful game by far. He played 36 of a possible 45 minutes.

2) Naithan George has to be better with the ball

Syracuse broadcaster Matt Park said that George was a "liability" with the ball at one point during the radio broadcast, and he was right. The Orange committed 18 turnovers as a team, and George had seven of them versus only two assists.

When you have the ball as much as he does, you are prone to higher turnover numbers, but a 2:7 assist-to-turnover ratio is unacceptable. When you lose to bad teams, a lot of the times it's because you beat yourself. This is the definition of it.

George, who had been a much more dynamic scorer lately as well, only had six points on 2-of-8 shooting, making this an all-around clunker.

3) Nothing from the bench

Sometimes the bench doesn't play well, and sometimes the bench isn't given an opportunity to play well. This is more a combination of the two.

Syracuse only played four bench players, and only two played more than nine minutes (Kiyan Anthony and Tyler Betsey). The Orange got just two points from the bench, and the bench was just 0-of-6 from the field. There needs to be more production from that unit, but head coach Adrian Autry needs to give consistent opportunities as well. Betsey hit six threes in the win over Florida State on Tuesday, and was only given 16 minutes in this one.
