Syracuse received unexpected and unwelcome news Tuesday morning when starting running back Yasin Wllis announced he will enter the transfer portal when it opens next week.
“My time at Syracuse University has been incredibly meaningful, and I am thankful for the lessons learned both on and off the field," he wrote.
"To my teammates, thank you for the brotherhood, support, and memories we built together. The relationships and moments we shared will always be a part of me.
"I also want to extend my appreciation to Coach Fran Brown, Coach Jeff Nixon, Coach Devin Redd, and the entire Syracuse University football staff. Thank you for believing in me and investing in my development as a player and as a person. I have great respect for the program and everyone who contributes to its success.
"After careful reflection and thoughtful conversations with my family, I have made the decision to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal. I will be entering the portal with two years of eligibility remaining.
"Thank you, Syracuse University, for the foundation and opportunities you have provided."
Willis was the leading rusher for the Orange last season, totaling 558 yards on 129 carries with four touchdowns in a pass-centered offense. He appeared in nine games.
Syracuse.com reported Tuesday that 18 Orange players have indicated their plans to transfer. Among them, only Willis was a starter last season.
The 247Sports composite ranked Willis, a New Jersey native, as the No.43 running back in the 2024 class.

On Monday, backup running back Jaden Hart announced his intention to transfer on Instagram.
Hart had minimal opportunities last season, carrying the ball 15 times for 53 yards.
Overall, Syracuse averaged 340.4 yards per game – 123.2 yards rushing and 217.2 passing.
The Orange’s offense sailed through the first four games of the season, with veteran transfer quarterback Steve Angeli averaging 329.2 yards passing. In that fourth game, a victory over Clemson, however, Angeli tore his left Achilles tendon and missed the remainder of the season.
Syracuse’s Brown will be one coach actively looking at the portal for both players to compensate for those lost to transfers but also to add depth at specific positions, especially quarterback given what Brown witnessed in 2025 following the Angeli injury.
Angeli has been rehabbing with his sights set on a return for a final season in 2026.
