TCU hosts Cincinnati in a key Big 12 showdown as Xavier Edmonds and David Punch lead the Horned Frogs in a battle with postseason stakes.

FORT WORTH - TCU basketball returns to Fort Worth Saturday afternoon for a critical Big 12 matchup against Cincinnati, with both teams looking to strengthen their position heading toward the conference tournament.

The Horned Frogs enter the contest riding momentum after a 73-65 win over Texas Tech, where Xavier Edmonds powered the offense with 20 points.

Jamie Dixon’s squad has been tough to beat at home this season, posting a 13-5 record in Fort Worth and showing a knack for grinding out physical games.

Much of TCU’s recent success has come from the consistent play of its frontcourt.

David Punch has been one of the Frogs’ most reliable contributors, averaging 13.6 points, 6.7 rebounds and two blocks per game, while providing interior defense and rebounding.

Meanwhile, Edmonds has been on a tear, averaging 15.5 points and 10.3 rebounds over the last 10 games, turning into a double-double machine as the regular season winds down.

But Cincinnati will bring its own momentum into the matchup.

The Bearcats (17-13, 9-8 Big 12) have quietly been one of the hotter teams in the conference, going 7-3 over their last 10 games.

Cincinnati has relied heavily on Baba Miller, who averages 13.8 points, 10 rebounds and 3.6 assists, giving the Bearcats a versatile presence in the paint.

Perimeter scoring is another weapon for Cincinnati.

Guard Jizzle James has been heating up from long range, knocking down 2.8 3-pointers per game over the past 10 contests.

Statistically, the matchup looks evenly balanced. TCU shoots 44.8 percent from the field, while Cincinnati holds opponents to just 41.5 percent shooting, one of the better defensive marks in the conference.

Still, the Horned Frogs may have a key advantage in experience and home-court energy.

With postseason positioning on the line and two teams playing their best basketball late in the year, Saturday’s showdown at Schollmaier Arena could turn into one of the most physical and competitive games of the weekend in the Big 12.
