Former TCU standout Quentin Johnston entered the 2026 season with an important vote of confidence from the Los Angeles Chargers.
Now, just two games into the season, the fourth-year wide receiver is already facing pressure to show why the organization decided to invest in his future.
Los Angeles picked up Johnston's fifth-year option during the offseason, meaning the Chargers are currently committed to paying him $16.5 million in 2027.
That decision reflected the belief that Johnston could become an important piece of the offense, but his start to the season has provided little evidence of that so far.
Johnston has recorded just three receptions for 24 yards through two games.
The lack of production isn't entirely on Johnston, however. Los Angeles' passing game has struggled as a whole under new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel.
Justin Herbert has had difficulties adjusting to the new system, while injuries and inconsistent execution have limited the offense's ability to create explosive plays.
Still, Johnston has a particularly important role to play.
The Chargers need another consistent threat alongside Ladd McConkey, especially with McConkey dealing with a chest injury in Week 2.
Johnston has the size and athletic ability to threaten defenses downfield, and his presence could create more opportunities for the rest of the Chargers' passing attack.
That is why the early struggles are notable for the former Horned Frog.
Johnston has shown throughout his NFL career that he is capable of producing at a high level. He opened the 2025 season with 22 receptions for 337 yards and four touchdowns over his first four games before his production declined later in the season.
The Chargers don't necessarily need Johnston to become their No. 1 receiver. They do, however, need him to become a reliable weapon capable of consistently making defenses account for him.
With difficult matchups against the Buffalo Bills, Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos coming up, there won't be much time for Johnston and the Chargers' offense to figure things out.
For TCU fans watching from Fort Worth, Johnston's early struggles are frustrating, but his opportunity remains significant. The Chargers have already demonstrated their belief in his potential. Now, Johnston has the chance to show that belief was justified.
