With Ladd McConkey sidelined, Quentin Johnston faces a high-stakes moment to shed his consistency struggles and revitalize a winless Los Angeles offense hungry for an explosive playmaker.

Another injury to Ladd McConkey could create an important opportunity for former TCU standout Quentin Johnston to finally make a bigger impact for the Los Angeles Chargers.

McConkey entered Sunday’s matchup with the Seattle Seahawks dealing with a foot injury after already battling a rib issue earlier this season. Although he initially suited up, the Chargers wide receiver was unable to finish the game after appearing to aggravate the foot problem. McConkey was ultimately ruled out for the remainder of the contest.

The latest setback is particularly unfortunate for McConkey, who has emerged as one of the Chargers’ most dependable offensive weapons. At the same time, his absence could give Johnston an opportunity that the former TCU star needs to take advantage of.

Johnston entered the 2026 season with expectations of taking another step forward, but the results have not been there so far. The Chargers' offense has struggled to consistently generate production, and Johnston has been part of those struggles.

The former Horned Frogs star has seven catches for 108 yards and no scores so far this season, and he caught just one pass for 44 yards in the Chargers' game against the Seahawks.

Through the early portion of the season, Johnston has struggled to turn his opportunities into meaningful production. He has shown flashes of the talent that made him a first-round pick, but consistency has remained an issue.

That makes McConkey's injury potentially significant for Johnston.

With McConkey sidelined, Johnston should see an increased number of targets and could become a much more prominent part of Justin Herbert's passing attack.

The opportunity, however, only matters if Johnston makes something of it.

This is the type of situation where the former Horned Frog can potentially change the narrative surrounding his season. Johnston possesses the size and athleticism to create explosive plays, but he has to become more reliable when the football comes his way.

The Chargers could desperately use that version of Johnston. Los Angeles is 0-4, and has struggled offensively to begin the season. And losing McConkey for any extended period would only increase the pressure on the rest of the receiving corps.

For TCU fans, there is plenty of reason to hope Johnston can capitalize.

McConkey's latest injury is obviously disappointing, but it could give Johnston the expanded role he needs to get his season moving in the right direction. Now, he has to prove he can turn those additional opportunities into production.
