After dodging a major setback at training camp, the Chargers’ explosive playmaker looks to translate his physical dominance into a career-defining campaign alongside quarterback Justin Herbert.

Quentin Johnston’s latest injury scare appears to be nothing more than that — a scare — and that is especially encouraging for a former TCU standout entering an important season with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Johnston limped off the field during Tuesday’s joint practice with the San Francisco 49ers, creating some concern about whether he had suffered another setback. However, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Johnston is "totally fine" and is not expected to miss much, if any, practice time.

That is good news for Johnston, who has dealt with several injuries during his young NFL career. Staying healthy could be one of the biggest factors in determining just how high his ceiling is in 2026.

The former first-round pick has already shown signs of becoming a reliable weapon in Los Angeles. Johnston has recorded eight touchdown catches in each of the past two seasons, while finishing the 2025 campaign with 51 receptions for 735 yards. His production has steadily improved since his rookie season, but there is reason to believe he has another level to reach.

Johnston’s physical tools have never been the question. At TCU, he demonstrated the size, speed, and explosiveness that made him one of the top wide receiver prospects in the 2023 NFL Draft. Those same traits have translated into big plays with Justin Herbert, and a full, healthy season could allow him to put everything together more consistently.

The Chargers have also picked up Johnston’s fifth-year option, signaling that the organization still believes there is significant potential left to unlock.

For Johnston, the priority now is simple: stay on the field.

He has already established himself as a legitimate touchdown threat, but his ceiling could be considerably higher if he can avoid the injuries that have interrupted portions of his career. More consistent availability would give Johnston additional opportunities to build chemistry with Herbert and establish himself as one of the Chargers’ primary offensive weapons.

Tuesday’s news suggests Johnston avoided another significant setback. That may seem like a small development, but for a player with his talent, simply getting a full season of opportunities could make a major difference.

If Johnston stays healthy in 2026, TCU fans could be watching the beginning of the breakout many expected when he entered the NFL.
