TCU begins the Jaden Craig era against Bill Belichick and North Carolina in Dublin, one year after crushing the Tar Heels by 34 points.
TCU football has an opportunity to ruin Bill Belichick’s season opener for the second consecutive year when the Horned Frogs face North Carolina on Saturday in Dublin, Ireland.
The Aer Lingus College Football Classic is a rematch of TCU’s 48-14 demolition of UNC in Belichick’s college debut.
North Carolina opened that game with an 82-yard touchdown drive before the Frogs answered by scoring 48 of the final 55 points and outgaining the Tar Heels 542-222.
Repeating that performance won’t be easy. Both programs enter 2026 with new quarterbacks, new offensive coordinators and plenty of unanswered questions.
Harvard transfer Jaden Craig will make his TCU debut after leaving the Ivy League as the school’s career leader in passing yards and touchdowns.
Craig threw for 6,074 yards and 52 scores at Harvard, including single-season records of 2,869 yards, 25 touchdowns and 208 completions in 2025.
Now comes the real test: translating that production to Power Four football.
Craig will direct an offense coordinated by former UConn play-caller Gordon Sammis. TCU also returns an experienced offensive line that Sonny Dykes believes could be his best in five seasons.
That group must contain UNC defensive lineman Melkart Abou Jaoude, who led the ACC and ranked fifth nationally with 10.5 sacks last season.
North Carolina counters with Wisconsin transfer Billy Edwards at quarterback and veteran Bobby Petrino calling the offense.
Expect UNC to protect Edwards by leaning on Demon June, who rushed for 494 yards while averaging 5.5 yards per carry, and Benjamin Hall.
That makes TCU’s run defense critical. If the Frogs stop June and Hall early, they can force Edwards into obvious passing situations against a veteran secondary led by Jamel Johnson.
Johnson recorded 96 tackles and five interceptions last season, with his interception total leading the Big 12.
UNC’s defense will also operate without coordinator Steve Belichick, who remains on medical leave and isn’t expected in Dublin.
Bill Belichick and defensive-line coach Bob Diaco have reportedly collaborated on the plan, with the head coach expected to call defensive plays.
Turnovers could decide whether the rematch becomes another TCU runaway or a four-quarter fight. The Frogs went 8-0 last season when committing fewer than two turnovers but lost four of the five games in which they gave the ball away at least twice.
TCU enters Dublin as the favorite and owns an impressive streak of scoring at least 28 points in 30 consecutive non-conference regular-season games.
But international openers have produced chaos. The previous five Dublin games not involving Notre Dame and Navy were decided by three points or fewer.
TCU embarrassed Belichick once. Doing it again - with a new quarterback, on another continent - would announce the Horned Frogs as a genuine Big 12 contender.
