New England added TCU linebacker Namdi Obiazor in Round 6, landing athletic depth and special teams value for Mike Vrabel’s defense.
Namdi Obiazor had to wait until the sixth round, but the former TCU linebacker landed in a place where his skill set makes plenty of sense.
The New England Patriots selected Obiazor with the No. 212 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, adding a long, athletic defender to a linebacker room that needed more depth.
For TCU football, it’s another draft win built on development, toughness and versatility.
Obiazor finished last season with 88 tackles, two sacks and two interceptions for the Horned Frogs.
That production followed a steady three-year run as a starter, with Obiazor topping 80 tackles in each of his final three college seasons.
What makes him intriguing for New England is the athletic profile. Obiazor began his college career as a 190-pound safety at Iowa Western Community College before growing into a 6-3, 229-pound linebacker.
He also ran a 4.53-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine, giving the Patriots real speed at the second level.
That background should help him in coverage and on special teams, two areas that matter for late-round rookies trying to make the active roster.
Obiazor already has kick coverage experience from TCU, and that could be his fastest path to game-day snaps.
Mike Vrabel’s defense still has bigger names ahead of him, including Robert Spillane and Christian Elliss, but Obiazor has a realistic shot to carve out a role as a backup linebacker and special teams contributor.
New England didn’t make a flashy pick. It made a practical one.
Obiazor tackles well, moves well and brings position flexibility from his safety background. For a sixth-round selection, that’s exactly the kind of profile worth betting on.
Now the former Horned Frog gets his chance to prove he’s more than late-round depth.
