TCU announced that Louisiana Tech transfer safety Jacob Fields is no longer with the Horned Frogs after violating team rules.
While is countdown to kickoff is rapidly growing shorter, TCU will be making a few adjustments to its game plans ahead of its season opener against North Carolina.
The program announced that transfer safety Jacob Fields has been dismissed due to a violation of team rules.
"Due to a violation of team rules, Jacob Fields has been removed from our roster and will not be a member of our football team moving forward," read a statement from a spokesperson for the Horned Frogs.
No other official word on the cause of Fields' removal has been made by TCU. However, Steven Johnson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported that it stemmed from a physical incident with a teammate.
According to Johnson, an aggravated assault was reported at the John Justin locker rooms on Aug. 14. The incident was reported to have taken place the day prior but no other information was made available.
Regardless of what led to the decision, Fields' absence sends ripples through a Horned Frog team that was putting on its finishing touches before heading off to Ireland to begin their latest season.
After spending last year at Louisiana Tech, Fields became a star for the Bulldogs. He finished with 92 total tackles and three interceptions, two of which he returned for touchdowns, which earned him Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year honors.
He was sought after by TCU in the transfer portal to potentially serve as the replacement for stellar safety Bud Clark, who is now in the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks.
Fields would have also stood opposite of Jamel Johnson, who has been consistently labeled as one of the strongest secondary forces in the Big 12 and possibly the entire nation.
The duo could have been one of the most lethal forces for conference foes looking to stretch the field and generate explosive plays through the air.
Instead, Fields is now out of the lineup and locker room, as head coach Sonny Dykes will have to make a late substitution before meeting up with the Bill Belichick-led Tar Heels.
The most likely candidate for the job is believed to be senior Jordan Lester. He served as Clark's backup for the past three years and was in line to take over before the move to bring in Fields.
Coming full circle, Lester has the opportunity to showcase all he learned from Clark, which the Horned Frogs hope is quite a bit, and get the chance to start after all.
And he will not have to wait much longer, as TCU stares down its opener with North Carolina in less than two weeks on Aug. 29.
