TCU football enters 2026 with offensive upside, defensive questions and major Big 12 expectations before its Ireland opener.
TCU football enters the 2026 season with a different kind of buzz. This isn’t just offseason optimism around Sonny Dykes’ program.
It’s the feeling that the Horned Frogs have enough returning talent, new pieces and urgency to climb back into the Big 12 title race finally.

One name to watch is running back Jeremy Payne. His workload was limited last season, but the production was hard to ignore.
Payne averaged 5.7 yards per carry on 110 rushing attempts, and his walk-off touchdown against USC may have been the moment that launched bigger expectations for him. If TCU leans into him more, the offense could have the balance it has lacked at times.
The passing game also has a major vacancy to fill. Eric McCalister’s graduation leaves behind 72 catches, 1,190 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Jordan Dwyer appears ready for a larger role after flashing big-play ability, including a nine-catch, 136-yard performance with a touchdown against North Carolina.
Jeremy Scott, Terry Shelton and Ed Small could also factor into a receiver group with plenty to prove.
Defensively, the questions are just as important. TCU lost safety Bud Clark and linebacker Kaleb Elarms-Orr, two key pieces from the heart of the unit.
The Frogs also need more game-changing plays after finishing last season with only a plus-one turnover margin. That number has to improve if TCU wants to protect its offense and swing close Big 12 games.
What makes 2026 interesting is the possibility of real roster balance. The offense has proven playmakers. The defense has a clear challenge.
The transfer portal has been used to patch holes. And the Ireland opener gives the season a national stage feel right away.
TCU has spent the past few years chasing the standard it set in 2022. Now the reset is here, and the pressure is real.
