Jamel Johnson gives TCU one of the highest-rated safeties in College Football 27, while transfer punter John Hoyet Chance arrives as a major special teams upgrade.
EA Sports has been rolling out individual ratings ahead of the full release of College Football 27 player and team ratings on June 26, and TCU has two names showing up among the top 140 players in the game.
Safety Jamel Johnson comes in at 90 overall, tying him for the third-best strong safety rating in the game. The rating tracks with what he just did on the field for the Horned Frogs.
Johnson led the Big 12 with five interceptions last season and finished as TCU’s second-leading tackler with 96 total tackles and three tackles for loss across all 13 games. He earned All-Big 12 honors and Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week after a two-interception performance against SMU in the Iron Skillet rivalry game, and he picked off a pass during TCU’s Alamo Bowl win over USC.
After briefly testing the transfer portal following the 2025 season, Johnson withdrew and committed to returning for his senior year in 2026, stepping into the role of TCU’s top returning leader in the secondary.
Punter John Hoyet Chance checks in at 82 overall, putting him among the better punters in the game. Chance arrives at TCU via the transfer portal from Louisiana Tech, where he became the program’s primary punter and kicker last season as a redshirt freshman.
He punted 66 times for an average of 47.27 yards per attempt, a mark that ranked 15th among all 199 punters in college football, and boomed a long of 72 yards against Liberty. He also handled kickoffs for the Bulldogs, landing 60 touchbacks on 67 attempts.
He steps into TCU’s starting punter role replacing the graduated Ethan Craw, who averaged 41.5 yards per punt a season ago, making Chance a significant upgrade at the position before he has even taken a snap in Fort Worth.
College Football 27 releases July 9th, giving TCU fans their first complete look at how Sonny Dykes’ roster looks heading into the 2026 season. The Horned Frogs are looking to climb back into Big 12 contention, and having two players rated among the best at their respective positions in the country is a small but real building block heading into the year.
TCU fans can check the complete rollout of team and player ratings at EA.com once everything goes live.
