Texas A&M softball kept the bats hot and the pitching airtight Sunday, knocking off Louisiana 5-1 at Davis Diamond to close the Texas A&M Invitational in style.
Behind Kelsey Mathis’ three-run home run and a complete-game gem from Sydney Lessentine, the No. 15 Aggies improved to 15-7 and continued building momentum heading into March.
If you’re searching for the formula to win in the SEC, Texas A&M may have found it ... timely power, relentless contact and a pitcher who refuses to blink.
The Aggies wasted no time applying pressure. In the second inning, Paislie Allen ripped a double to right before Mathis punched an RBI single through the middle to crack the scoreboard.
Frankie Vrazel wore a pitch, and Tallen Edwards followed with a sharp single to extend the lead to 2-0.
Then came the knockout punch. In the third, after Ariel Kowalewski reached and Allen worked a walk, Mathis stepped in and unloaded on a 238-foot three-run homer.
The blast - her third of the season - sent Davis Diamond into a roar and pushed Texas A&M softball ahead 5-0. Mathis finished 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored, matching her career high in RBIs for the second time this season.
While the offense grabbed headlines, Sydney Lessentine (6-1) quietly dominated in the circle.
The sophomore tossed her third complete game of the year, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out four and issuing zero walks. She faced only 24 batters and limited Louisiana to a .130 batting average.
Efficiency defined her afternoon as she needed just eight pitches to retire the side in the seventh and slam the door.
Louisiana threatened in the sixth, but Allen delivered a highlight-reel moment, climbing the wall in left to rob a would-be solo home run. It was that kind of day for the Maroon & White.
Tallen Edwards added three hits and a stolen base, extending her hitting streak to eight games.
Kennedy Powell and Mya Perez both reached safely again, pushing their nation-leading on-base streaks to 25 games.
Texas A&M softball now turns its attention to Louisiana Tech on March 4, riding a seven-game home run streak and outscoring opponents 52-12 over the weekend tournament.
