Texas A&M missed on John Meredith, but Mike Elko’s No. 1-ranked 2027 recruiting class still has major five-star targets in play.
Texas A&M recruiting took a punch from Texas, but Mike Elko’s 2027 class is still standing on top of the mountain.
The Aggies missed out on five-star cornerback John Meredith on Friday when the elite defensive back committed to the Longhorns after his official visit.
That stung, no question. Meredith was a priority target, and Texas didn’t just add a blue-chip corner. It added one of the most important defensive wins of its 2027 cycle.
But this is where the story gets interesting.
Even after Texas landed Meredith, Texas A&M remains No. 1 in the 2027 recruiting rankings across the major services, including ESPN.
That says plenty about what Elko has built entering his third season in College Station.
The Aggies aren’t leaning on one splash commitment. They’ve stacked the class with balance, size and serious NFL upside.
The latest proof came with five-star outside linebacker Kaden Henderson, one of the top athletes in the cycle.
His addition only strengthened a class that already looks nasty in the trenches.
Texas A&M currently has four offensive line commitments and five defensive line or edge commitments, giving the Aggies the kind of foundation coaches dream about and opponents hate to see forming.
Now the focus shifts to the secondary and perimeter weapons.
Five-star cornerback Joshua Dobson has already taken his official visit to Texas A&M and is scheduled to announce his commitment on July 1.
If Elko and cornerbacks coach Bryant Gross-Armiento can land Dobson, the Meredith miss becomes a lot easier to absorb.
There’s also five-star wide receiver Eric McFarland, who is set to announce on June 28.
If the Aggies hit on McFarland and Dobson, this class could shift from elite to borderline ruthless.
Texas made a statement. Texas Tech is surging. LSU and Georgia Tech have entered the top-25 picture.
But right now, the 2027 recruiting race still runs through College Station.
