Miami’s sudden quarterback overhaul places a heavy burden on Malik Willis, forcing the Dolphins to lean on De’Von Achane’s explosive playmaking to anchor their inexperienced 2026 offense.
The Miami Dolphins have made another move to address their quarterback room, but the latest addition could have an even bigger impact on one of the team's most important offensive weapons.
Miami acquired quarterback Kyle McCord from the Green Bay Packers on Sunday in exchange for a 2028 sixth-round pick, according to ESPN. The move came shortly after the Dolphins traded Quinn Ewers to the Jacksonville Jaguars and waived quarterbacks Cam Miller and Mark Gronowski. McCord is expected to serve as the backup to Malik Willis.
That leaves Miami with a remarkably inexperienced quarterback room heading into the 2026 season.
Willis is expected to take over as the Dolphins' starter after signing a three-year, $67.5 million contract with Miami in the offseason. McCord, meanwhile, has yet to appear in a regular-season NFL game. He did have an encouraging preseason with Green Bay, throwing for 446 yards and four touchdowns without an interception.
With so much uncertainty at quarterback, the Dolphins could have plenty of motivation to make life easier for Willis. One of the simplest ways to do that would be to put the ball in the hands of their best offensive playmaker as often as possible.
Enter former Texas A&M star De'Von Achane.
Achane has already established himself as one of the NFL's most explosive running backs, and Miami's current situation could create an opportunity for him to take on an even larger role. Rather than asking Willis to carry the offense through the air, the Dolphins could rely heavily on Achane to control the pace of games, generate explosive plays and take pressure off their quarterback.
That could mean a major season for the former Aggie.
Achane's combination of speed and big-play ability makes him uniquely suited for a workload-heavy offense. Even when defenses know he is going to receive the ball, he has the ability to turn a routine handoff into a huge gain.
Miami's quarterback situation also makes protecting Willis particularly important. If the Dolphins can establish the running game early, it could help keep Willis out of obvious passing situations while allowing Achane to become the centerpiece of the offense.
The addition of McCord gives Miami a legitimate second option behind Willis, but it doesn't change the bigger picture. The Dolphins are still entering the season with significant uncertainty at quarterback.
For Achane, that uncertainty could ultimately become an opportunity.
That's not to say that Willis is going to be bad at all, because he showed a lot of promise last season. But with only two options at QB, handing the ball off as much as possible could take some pressure off of the field general.
