Texas A&M running back EJ Smith turned heads at Pro Day and earned a Dallas Day invite from Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer after a strong workout.

Texas A&M running back EJ Smith may have helped himself more than almost anyone at the Aggies’ Pro Day, turning a solid college body of work into a fresh NFL opportunity.

The former Aggies back, who spent the 2025 season as part of a productive Texas A&M running back room, did enough in front of scouts to land an invitation to the Cowboys’ Dallas Day workout later this month.

That’s a notable next step for Smith, especially with Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer among the NFL decision-makers watching in College Station.

Smith already carries a recognizable football name as the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer and former Cowboys legend Emmitt Smith, who is also the NFL's all-time leading rusher. Still, Wednesday was about more than family ties.

It was about testing numbers, toughness, and showing he still has something to offer an NFL backfield.

Smith’s measurable results gave evaluators something to notice. He posted a 10-foot broad jump, a 35.5-inch vertical, and 20 reps on the bench press at 225 pounds. For a back who battled injuries earlier in his college career, that kind of Pro Day performance helped reinforce his athletic profile and physical style.

After transferring to Texas A&M from Stanford before the 2024 season, Smith carved out a role as experienced depth in the Aggies’ backfield. With Le’Veon Moss sidelined late in 2025, Smith became more important in the rotation alongside Rueben Owens and Jamarion Morrow.

His best outing came in the road win over Arkansas, when he rushed for 52 yards and averaged 7.4 yards per carry. He also found the end zone against Missouri, South Carolina, and Texas.

Smith may not enter the NFL as a headline-grabbing draft pick, but he’s doing exactly what fringe prospects must do: stack strong impressions.

After Texas A&M Pro Day, EJ Smith has real momentum and now a real shot to keep proving himself in front of the Cowboys.
