Texas A&M opens March Madness against Saint Mary’s on Thursday in Oklahoma City as the Aggies try to survive a brutal first-round test in the NCAA Tournament.
Texas A&M basketball is officially on the clock, and the Aggies vs Saint Mary’s matchup looks like one of the nastiest draws in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
If the Aggies want to keep dancing, they’ll have to handle a Saint Mary’s team that rebounds at a high level, plays through contact, and doesn’t waste chances at the foul line. In other words, this one could get uncomfortable fast.
Now for the real problem. Texas A&M can score with almost anybody, entering the tournament as the No. 9 scoring offense in college basketball, but this matchup attacks a few areas that have been shaky at times.
Saint Mary’s comes in at 27-5 and brings one of the most physical frontcourts the Aggies will see all year. The Gaels also rank 13th nationally in rebounding and have three players averaging double figures, which means this won’t be a one-man scouting report.
That puts pressure on Texas A&M to be cleaner than usual in the paint.
The Aggies have had stretches where they’ve struggled to control the glass, even though they’ve been elite on the offensive boards over the last two seasons.
In fact, Texas A&M averaged 17.8 offensive rebounds per game last season, best among Power Conference teams, and has averaged 15.4 offensive boards per game since the start of 2023-24.
That effort has to show up again, especially from Rashaun Agee, who may be the key to keeping this game from tilting toward Saint Mary’s size.
Defensively, Texas A&M does have weapons. The Aggies allow opponents to shoot just 30 percent from 3, one of the best marks among Power Conference teams, and they force 13.5 turnovers per game while averaging 8.1 steals.
The catch is simple ... Saint Mary’s punishes mistakes, and Texas A&M can’t afford one of those foul-heavy second halves that have popped up too often.
Thursday night feels like a toughness test. And if the Aggies pass it, nobody’s going to want to see them in the next round.
