Texas is trending for 5-star cornerback John Meredith, putting Texas A&M in chase mode for one of the top defenders in 2027.
Texas A&M football has built major early momentum in the 2027 recruiting cycle, but rival Texas may be gaining the upper hand for one of the biggest defensive prizes in the class.
Five-star cornerback John Meredith, widely viewed as the nation’s No. 1 player at his position, is now trending toward Texas after recent predictions from Rivals analysts Sam Spiegelman and Steve Wiltfong.
That doesn’t make his recruitment over, but it does put the Aggies in a tougher spot as the Longhorns push to land an elite secondary centerpiece.
For Texas A&M, missing on Meredith would sting. The Aggies already have three 5-star commitments in the 2027 class and have positioned themselves as one of the early national powers on the trail.
Adding Meredith would give them a potential lockdown corner in a sport where explosive passing attacks are forcing defenses to find rare athletes outside.
Texas, meanwhile, has a chance to make a loud statement. Landing Meredith would not only strengthen the Longhorns’ future defense, it would give them a recruiting win over their in-state rival in a cycle already packed with high-profile battles.
There’s still plenty of time before signing day, and recruiting momentum can shift fast. Visits, relationships, NIL conversations and depth-chart projections can all change the direction of a recruitment.
Still, the current trend matters. Texas A&M has stacked elite talent early, but Texas appears to be surging for one of the most coveted defenders in the 2027 class.

The Aggies aren’t out of the picture, and they have other top defensive targets available.
But if Meredith ultimately chooses Austin, it would be a major win for Texas and a reminder that this rivalry is now being fought just as fiercely in recruiting as it is on the field.
