Sean McVay’s marquee pass rusher remains sidelined following knee surgery, leaving a depleted defensive front to scramble for answers as mounting injuries threaten to derail the season.
The Los Angeles Rams will have to wait longer to see their biggest offseason acquisition return to the field, as star pass rusher Myles Garrett is expected to continue to sit on the sidelines.
According to reports published Monday, October 19, Garrett will not have his practice window opened this week, extending an absence that has become a significant concern for a Rams team dealing with multiple injuries.
The news comes at a difficult time for Los Angeles, which is attempting to regroup after a narrow 18-16 loss to the Arizona Cardinals in Week 6.
Garrett has been sidelined since the Rams' season-opening 27-7 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in Australia. Following that game, the veteran underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee and was placed on injured reserve on September 17. Although he was required to miss at least four games, his recovery has taken longer than initially hoped.
Head coach Sean McVay has emphasized that the organization will not rush Garrett back before he is ready. The team wants the former NFL Defensive Player of the Year to regain the form that made him one of the league's most feared pass rushers before returning to game action.
The Rams acquired Garrett from the Cleveland Browns during the offseason in a blockbuster move designed to strengthen their defense. However, his knee troubles limited his participation during training camp, and he struggled to make an impact in the season opener before being shut down for surgery.
Garrett's continued absence is especially damaging because Los Angeles is losing other important defensive contributors. Nose tackle Poona Ford suffered a season-ending triceps injury against Arizona, while defensive tackle Kobie Turner sustained a groin injury that is expected to sideline him for several weeks. Those losses leave the Rams with fewer options along the defensive front as they prepare for Las Vegas.
The offensive side of the ball has also taken a major hit. Wide receiver Davante Adams is expected to miss six to 10 weeks after suffering a hamstring injury, further complicating the team's efforts to bounce back from its recent defeat.
For Los Angeles, the priority now is managing its depleted roster while allowing injured players enough time to recover. Garrett remains a major part of the team's long-term plans, but his return date remains uncertain.
The Rams will need other defenders to step up against the Raiders while they wait for their marquee acquisition to get healthy. With injuries mounting on both sides of the ball, the coming weeks could prove critical to determining whether Los Angeles can regain momentum and remain competitive.
