Texas A&M baseball jumped Texas in the SEC standings after a huge rivalry weekend and now heads to LSU with real momentum in the conference title chase.
Texas A&M baseball made a loud statement in the SEC standings over the weekend, rising to second place after taking two games from No. 2 Texas in the latest Lone Star Showdown.
The Aggies didn’t get the chance to finish the sweep because of the weather, but they still left Bryan-College Station with exactly what they needed: a rivalry series win and a major boost in the SEC baseball race.
That kind of weekend can change the tone of a season. With wins of 9-8 and 11-4, Michael Earley’s club moved to 27-7 overall and 9-5 in SEC play, matching Texas in conference record while moving ahead in the pecking order thanks to the head-to-head result.
Only Georgia, sitting at 11-4 in league play, stands above the Aggies entering the next stretch of conference action.
The biggest reason for Texas A&M’s rise is simple ... the bats are doing damage. After hanging 20 runs on the Longhorns across two games, the Aggies now rank near the top of the conference in several key offensive categories.
Texas A&M sits third in the SEC in team batting average at .317, third in home runs with 70, and second in RBI with 307. That production is giving the Aggies a real chance to stay in the hunt, not just for a strong postseason seed, but also for the regular-season conference crown.
Of course, the schedule won’t get any easier. Texas A&M still has major series ahead against ranked opponents, including Auburn, Mississippi State, Florida and Ole Miss.
Up next is another big challenge on the road against LSU at Alex Box Stadium.
The weekend series opens Friday at 6 p.m. CT, continues Saturday at 7 p.m. CT, and wraps up Sunday at 1 p.m. CT.
Friday’s opener and Sunday’s finale will air on ESPN, while Saturday’s game is set for the SEC Network.
Texas A&M has momentum now. The next question is whether the Aggies can keep swinging their way through one of the toughest stretches on the SEC schedule.
