Texas A&M baseball took down Texas to win the weekend series, handing Jim Schlossnagle a tough return to College Station in his first visit as a rival.
Texas A&M baseball made a loud statement this weekend, taking the series from No. 2 Texas and putting Jim Schlossnagle on the wrong side of a tense return to Bryan-College Station.
In one of the most anticipated SEC baseball matchups of the season, the Aggies overwhelmed the Longhorns with timely hitting, steady bullpen work and the kind of hostile energy that turned Blue Bell Park into a full-blown pressure cooker.
For Schlossnagle, the optics were impossible to ignore. The former Texas A&M head coach came back to face the Aggies as a conference opponent for the first time, but instead of leaving with a marquee road series win, his Longhorns dropped the first two games and now enter Sunday trying to avoid a sweep.
The numbers tell the story. Through the first two games, Texas has surrendered 20 runs on 16 hits, including two home runs, against an Aggies lineup that has consistently delivered quality at-bats.
That offensive production has backed up an equally sharp effort from the A&M bullpen, which gave up just four runs on seven hits while striking out eight in Game 2 to slam the door on Texas.
That result is especially notable given how strong Texas had looked entering the weekend. The Longhorns arrived in College Station ranked second nationally, sitting atop the SEC standings and leading the conference in ERA.
None of that has mattered much once the games started.
Instead, Texas A&M has controlled the series with a more aggressive presence at the plate and cleaner execution in key moments.
Schlossnagle reportedly pointed to his bullpen as a bright spot after the latest loss, but there’s still plenty for Texas to fix heading into the finale.
Now the focus shifts to Sunday. The Aggies have already claimed the series.
The next goal is obvious ... finish the job, complete the sweep, and make this rivalry weekend even sweeter for the Maroon and White.
