Texas A&M baseball didn’t get the national seed it wanted, but the Aggies still get the one thing every postseason team wants: a home-field shot.
No. 10 Texas A&M enters the NCAA Tournament as the No. 12 overall seed after finishing the regular season 39-14 and 18-11 in SEC play.
The Aggies won six SEC series, finished third in the league and earned a double-bye in the SEC Tournament, but a 4-6 finish over their final 10 games clearly hurt their resume.
Now, Michael Earley’s team has to reset fast.
The College Station Regional opens Friday, May 29, with Texas A&M facing Lamar at 3 p.m. on SEC Network.
Texas State and USC round out the regional, giving the Aggies a dangerous but manageable path if they clean up the late-season mistakes.
The biggest postseason storyline may be health. Freshman third baseman Nico Partida is expected to be available after missing the last two weeks with a hamstring injury.
That’s a major lift for an Aggies lineup that needs length and energy after getting shut out by Auburn in the SEC Tournament.
Sophomore ace Aiden Sims is also trending toward a return, though he remains a game-time decision. Sims has been throwing at practice, and if he’s ready, Texas A&M’s ceiling changes immediately.
In tournament baseball, front-line pitching is everything.
The opener against Lamar is the first test, but the next matchup could get spicy. Texas State already beat Texas A&M earlier this season, while USC’s pitching issues may make the Trojans the more favorable draw.
If the Aggies survive College Station, a likely Super Regional matchup with No. 5 North Carolina could be waiting.
That’s the brutal beauty of June baseball. The seed matters, but not as much as momentum, health and pitching under pressure.
Texas A&M still has the roster to make noise. Now the Aggies have to prove the stumble is over.
