Texas A&M has canceled its 2027 home game against New Mexico, leaving Mike Elko and Trev Alberts searching for a new Sept. 18 opponent.

Texas A&M football’s 2027 schedule is already changing, and the Aggies now have a hole to fill before SEC play becomes the weekly grind everyone expects.

The Aggies have canceled their previously scheduled home game against New Mexico on Sept. 18, 2027, according to reporting confirmed by AggieYell’s Carter Karels after speaking with athletic director Trev Alberts.

That leaves Texas A&M looking for a replacement opponent for the third week of the season.

The move comes as New Mexico is reportedly shifting toward a road matchup at Texas Tech on that same date. For the Lobos, a trip to Lubbock would keep a Power Four opponent on the schedule while setting up another regional game against a familiar program.

For Texas A&M, the adjustment adds another item to Alberts’ offseason checklist. The Aggies are already locked into a 2027 opener against Texas State on Sept. 4, followed by a Sept. 11 matchup with Arizona State.

Now, Mike Elko’s program needs a new opponent for Sept. 18 before the SEC schedule takes over.

And that league slate won’t be light.

Texas A&M’s 2027 SEC schedule features home games against Georgia, LSU, Missouri, Ole Miss and Vanderbilt. The road schedule is even more demanding, with trips to Auburn, Florida, Mississippi State and Texas.

The change also comes as the Aggies prepare for a difficult 2026 season, which will include the first year of the SEC’s nine-game conference schedule.

Texas A&M opens that season against Missouri State on Sept. 5, then faces a league path that includes road games at LSU, Missouri, Alabama, South Carolina and Oklahoma.

For Elko, the mission is clear: build depth, protect the roster and make sure the Aggies are ready for a scheduling model that won’t offer many breaks.
