Former Aggies standout Mike Evans returned to practice Wednesday, overcoming an adductor injury to bolster San Francisco’s offense just before the veteran receiver’s highly anticipated debut in Australia.

Texas A&M fans have another reason to pay attention to the NFL’s opening week, as former Aggies star Mike Evans is trending toward being available for the San Francisco 49ers’ season opener.

Evans returned to practice Wednesday after dealing with an adductor injury, providing an encouraging update for a player who is expected to play a significant role in San Francisco’s offense this season.

The practice came just before the 49ers departed for Melbourne, Australia, where they will face the Los Angeles Rams in Week 1.

The veteran receiver had been sidelined as he worked his way back from the injury. San Francisco general manager John Lynch had said earlier in the week that the organization hoped to have Evans back on the field around the time the team arrived in Australia.

Instead, Evans was able to get back to work before the team’s departure.

That is particularly significant given how much the 49ers are counting on the former Texas A&M standout. Evans joined San Francisco in March after spending the first 12 seasons of his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who selected him seventh overall in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Evans has been one of the NFL’s most productive receivers throughout his career, and San Francisco believes his combination of size, route-running ability, and contested-catch skills can add another dimension to its offense.

And given the amount of players the 49ers have that are going to be sidelined to start the season, Evans needs to perform to the best of his abilities to help carry the team to victory on the offensive side of the ball.

For Aggies fans, seeing Evans back on the practice field is especially notable. The receiver remains one of the most successful NFL players in Texas A&M history, and his continued production has made him one of the program’s most recognizable football products at the professional level.

Evans still has to make it through the remainder of the week without a setback, but his return to practice is an important step in the right direction.

For Texas A&M fans watching one of their former stars, the message is simple: Mike Evans is getting closer to making his 49ers debut.
