Texas A&M men’s golf wasted no time turning its home-course edge into a leaderboard statement at the NCAA Bryan Regional. Playing at Traditions Club, the Aggies opened with a blistering 12-under 276 to take the team lead after Round 1.
That’s exactly how you start a postseason run.
Texas A&M leads a stacked field, sitting two shots ahead of North Carolina at 10 under.
TCU is third at 8 under, Texas is fourth at 7 under, and Tennessee holds the final NCAA Championship qualifying spot at 6 under. With only the top five teams advancing, every shot matters from here.
The Aggies were powered by a monster round from Wheaton Ennis, who fired a 6-under 66 to take the individual lead.
Ennis filled up the card with six birdies and an eagle, giving Texas A&M the kind of front-line performance every regional contender needs.
He’ll enter the second round one shot ahead of North Carolina’s Carson Bertagnole and Texas’ Luke Potter, who both opened at 5 under.
Aaron Pounds gave the Aggies another huge score, posting a 4-under 68 to sit tied for fourth.
Pounds closed with serious momentum, making five birdies on the day, including three over his final six holes.
Texas A&M also got a steady under-par round from Kris Kuvaas, who shot 2-under 70 and landed in a crowded tie for 10th.
Jaime Montojo and Shiv Parmar each carded even-par 72s, keeping the Aggies’ entire lineup from giving anything away.
That kind of depth is dangerous.
Now Texas A&M gets the spotlight pairing Tuesday morning with North Carolina and Texas. The Aggies tee off at 7 a.m. from No. 1 with a chance to tighten their grip on the regional.
The message after Day 1 was pretty clear: the road to the NCAA Championship may have to run through College Station.
