Texas A&M lost five-star cornerback John Meredith III to Texas, but the Aggies still own an elite class loaded with secondary talent.
Texas A&M recruiting took a hit Friday when five-star cornerback John Meredith III committed to the Texas Longhorns over the Aggies and Alabama Crimson Tide, giving Steve Sarkisian a monster win in the 2027 cycle.
For Mike Elko and Texas A&M, this one is going to sting.
Meredith, a Fort Worth standout, had been on the Aggies’ radar for nearly two years. Texas A&M offered him in June 2024, hosted him multiple times in College Station and got him on campus for an official visit on May 29.
The Aggies pushed hard, but Texas got the final shot with a June 5 official visit and closed the deal.
That’s recruiting at the highest level. One weekend can change everything.
Meredith is not just another blue-chip defensive back. The 6-2, 175-pound cornerback is rated as the No. 2 overall player, No. 1 cornerback and No. 2 player in Texas in the 247Sports Composite rankings.
He also earned MaxPreps Junior All-American recognition, despite rarely seeing many clean opportunities because high school quarterbacks often avoid his side of the field.
Still, don’t expect Texas A&M to disappear from this recruitment. A commitment is not a signed letter of intent, and Elko’s staff has plenty of time to keep working Meredith all the way to signing day.
The bigger picture is still strong for the Aggies. Missing on Meredith hurts, especially when he’s headed to Austin, but Texas A&M still sits on the nation’s top-ranked recruiting class with six five-star commitments and nine top-100 prospects.
The secondary haul is already nasty. Five-star cornerback Raylaun Henry is in the class, along with five-star safeties Kamarui Dorsey and JayQuan Snell.
Three-star safeties Loia Valade and Errol Kerns III add even more depth.
So yes, Texas won a big one. But Texas A&M’s class is still loaded — and this fight may not be over.
