Texas A&M returns to Kyle Field against The Citadel with Marcel Reed under pressure, a struggling rushing attack and Mike Elko searching for offensive answers.

Texas A&M football desperately needs something positive to happen, and Saturday's matchup against The Citadel gives Mike Elko's struggling Aggies an opportunity to get their season moving in the right direction.

The Aggies return to Kyle Field with a 3-3 record, including a disappointing 1-3 mark in SEC play, following an ugly 27-6 loss at Missouri. They'll also return to a familiar appearance, wearing their traditional maroon helmets, maroon jerseys and white pants against the Bulldogs.

But looking good won't mean much if the offense continues to struggle.

Quarterback Marcel Reed remains the starter despite a frustrating season that's seen Texas A&M tumble from a preseason top-10 ranking to the middle of the SEC standings.

Reed completed just 19 of 39 passes for 187 yards against Missouri, a performance that raised even more questions about the Aggies' passing attack.

The numbers were particularly troubling on the ground.

Texas A&M managed only 29 rushing yards against Missouri and finished with 216 total yards. The Aggies also failed to score a touchdown, relying on two David Olano field goals for their only points.

Elko didn't attempt to hide his frustration afterward, calling it "another extremely disappointing road performance" while acknowledging his offense couldn't establish any consistency.

Now comes The Citadel, an FCS opponent entering Saturday at 2-4.

For Texas A&M, the matchup should provide an opportunity to rebuild confidence, especially in the running game.

Freshman KJ Edwards and sophomore Jamarion Morrow are expected to receive substantial opportunities against a Bulldogs defense that could struggle with the Aggies' size and athleticism.

Morrow has shown encouraging development, while Edwards gives Texas A&M another explosive option out of the backfield.

The quarterback situation also deserves attention.

Elko has indicated he'll stick with Reed rather than make a change simply for the sake of change.

As the coach explained this week, "New isn't always better."

However, if Texas A&M establishes a comfortable lead, backup Brady Hart and freshman Helaman Casuga could receive valuable playing time.

Defensively, sophomore tackle Brandon Davis-Swain is emerging as an important contributor. His blocked field goal against Missouri was one of the few bright spots in an otherwise forgettable afternoon.

The bigger picture remains concerning.

Even a convincing victory over The Citadel won't erase Texas A&M's offensive failures against SEC opponents. The Aggies must demonstrate they can execute consistently, establish the run and avoid the mistakes that have repeatedly undermined their season.

Saturday isn't just about beating an over-matched opponent.

It's about showing that Texas A&M can still improve before returning to the challenges of SEC competition.

Kickoff is scheduled for noon Central at Kyle Field, with streaming coverage available on SEC Network+ and ESPN+.
