Texas A&M has the roster, quarterback and momentum to chase the CFP again, but Mike Elko’s Aggies still have one giant test: finally beating Texas at home, now.

Texas A&M football isn’t sneaking up on anyone anymore.

Not after Mike Elko dragged the Aggies into the College Football Playoff conversation for real, not after Marcel Reed threw for 3,169 yards, 25 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, and definitely not after the program watched 10 players hear their names called in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Now comes the hard part ... doing it again when everyone sees you coming.

That’s the challenge sitting in front of Elko in Year 3, and it’s why Texas A&M feels like one of the most fascinating teams in the SEC.

Reed is back with another year of command, another year of scar tissue and another shot to turn big-game flashes into big-game control.

After feeding KC Concepcion and Mario Craver for nearly 1,900 combined receiving yards and 13 touchdowns last season, Reed doesn’t need to prove he belongs. He needs to prove he can own November.

The roster turnover is impossible to ignore. Concepcion became a first-round pick, Cashius Howell turned an 11.5-sack SEC-leading season into a second-round selection by the Cincinnati Bengals, and a record draft haul stripped plenty of star power from College Station.

That sounds like a warning sign until you remember Elko has made a habit of turning roster questions into receipts.

Still, there’s a real edge to this season. Holmon Wiggins is taking over the offense as a first-time playcaller, and 17 transfer portal additions mean chemistry can’t be assumed.

Texas A&M may have more answers than weaknesses, especially with a defense expected to be strong on the back end, but SEC football punishes teams that need September to introduce themselves.

That’s why Chris Low listing the Aggies among serious SEC College Football Playoff contenders makes sense.

This isn’t blind hype. Texas A&M has a proven quarterback, a coach who has raised the floor fast and enough portal reinforcements to stay in the fight with Alabama, LSU, Ole Miss and Oklahoma.

But let’s be honest ... the entire season may be judged by one game.

Texas.

The Longhorns have beaten the Aggies twice since entering the SEC, and that can’t keep happening if Texas A&M wants to talk like a national title threat.

The trip through LSU, Missouri, South Carolina, Alabama and Oklahoma is brutal enough. But beating Texas at Kyle Field would change the feel of the whole Elko era.

Texas A&M doesn’t need validation anymore. It needs revenge.
